Postgraduate Certificate in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship

The Postgraduate Certificate in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship is designed to equip professionals with the tools, strategies, and methodologies needed to address systemic challenges and drive innovation in the construction and infrastructure sectors. Using the Decalogue Management Methodology and Theory of Constraints (TOC), this program empowers students to diagnose organizational constraints, craft actionable and profitable solutions, and launch entrepreneurial ventures that solve industry-specific problems. By the end of the program, participants will be prepared to lead transformations, innovate in real-world contexts, and drive both business success and sustainability.

Course Outlook

The Postgraduate Certificate in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program is an exciting new course where you do not just learn about entrepreneurship from others, but you practice entrepreneurship yourself during the academic year.

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the construction and infrastructure industry’s complex challenges, framed through a systemic approach that encourages both critical thinking and practical application. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of innovation processes, strategy development, conflict resolution, and the integration of business models within the industry. They will apply the Decalogue Management Methodology and Theory of Constraints (TOC) thinking processes to:

This is the program for you, if you:

  • Identify industry constraints
  • Develop scalable solutions
  • Launch market-ready entrepreneurial ventures

The final project, Profitable Innovation Project (PIP), offers participants the opportunity to develop a real-world construction or infrastructure innovation that is validated with users and demonstrates financial viability or investment traction.

Campus Immersion & Networking Opportunities

Entry requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Construction, Engineering, Business, or equivalent industry experience).
  • A minimum of 3 years professional experience in the construction or infrastructure industry.
  • A strong desire to innovate and solve industry challenges with entrepreneurial solutions.
  • English proficiency (for non-native speakers).

Who Should Attend?

This program is ideal for:

  • Entrepreneurs looking to develop scalable solutions in construction and infrastructure
  • Mid-career professionals in the construction and infrastructure sectors (e.g., engineers, managers, project leads)
  • Consultants who want to deepen their understanding of systemic problem-solving in industry
  • Business leaders interested in launching new ventures or improving existing operations

Course Schedule

Module One: Breakthrough Thinking for Continuous Innovation in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Topics Covered:

  • Introduction to Systems Thinking & Theory of Constraints (TOC)
  • Conflict Cloud Thinking Process
  • Mental Models and Limiting Assumptions
  • Identifying and addressing innovation blockages

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify constraints and limitations within your organization or industry
  • Utilize the Conflict Cloud to develop win-win solutions
  • Foster creative and disruptive thinking

Module Two: Crafting Complete, Thought-through Solutions for a Desirable Future in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship
Once we have identified a solution, we need a way to check that our solution will lead to desired outcomes and that it is complete. We also need to be able to identify and avoid potential unintended consequences that can interfere with the success of implementing our solution.

Topics Covered:

  • Future Reality Tree (FRT)
  • Negative Branch Reservation (NBR)
  • Designing complete solutions
  • Validating solutions to prevent unintended consequences

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Build cause-and-effect reasoning for robust solutions
  • Identify and prevent potential negative consequences
  • Apply TOC tools to create practical, systemic solutions

Module Three: Systemic Strategy and Implementation in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship
In construction and infrastructure, systemic blockages often stem from complex interdependencies and conflicting stakeholder priorities. The Decalogue Management Methodology and Theory of Constraints help uncover the core conflict behind these challenges by using the Core Conflict Cloud to link seemingly disconnected Undesirable Effects (UDEs). This tool reveals the limiting assumptions sustaining the conflict and provides a strategic starting point for designing targeted, systemic solutions. Resolving the core conflict enables breakthrough innovation, leading to faster project delivery, optimized resource use, and improved alignment across all phases of infrastructure development.

Topics Covered:

  • Core Conflict Cloud
  • Future Reality Tree for Complex Systems
  • Prerequisite and Transition Trees for implementation
  • Interconnecting solutions for systematic results

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Design and connect strategies that address root causes
  • Plan for scalable, sustainable implementation
  • Create roadmaps for strategic execution in complex environments

Module Four: External Constraint in Construction & Infrastructure Innovation & Entrepreneurship
In construction and infrastructure, the concept of the External Constraint, drawn from Goldratt’s It’s Not Luck, highlights the need to align marketing, sales, and operations around delivering exceptional value to all stakeholders. Using the Decalogue Management Methodology and Theory of Constraints, organizations can identify the market limitations holding them back, surface the underlying assumptions, and craft “unrefusable offers”—value propositions so compelling they remove customer resistance. This approach encourages a systemic view of the entire value network and ensures that promised value can be delivered reliably, enabling innovation, stronger partnerships, and sustainable growth.

Topics Covered:

  • Analyzing Undesirable Effects (UDEs) from the customer’s perspective
  • Crafting Unrefusable
  • Offers Integrating marketing and sales with operations
  • Designing customer-centric value propositions

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify real market needs and constraints
  • Design customer-driven innovations that resonate with stakeholders
  • Build integrated marketing, sales, and operations strategies

Module Five: Project Phase

  1. Use the 10 steps of the Decalogue Management Methodology to launch or grow an existing business
  2. Launch-ready strategy for project implementation

Topics Covered:

  • Identifying a meaningful industry constraint
  • Designing an innovation solution
  • Validating the solution with real users
  • Proving the innovation’s financial viability and investment potential

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Conduct real-world user validation
  • Develop business models and financial projections
  • Sell into profitability the innovation to potential clients

Support Provided:

  • Assigned mentor from industry or CIRMI team
  • Weekly design sprints and reviews
  • Business model validation with stakeholders
  • Access to industry partners and advisors
