The Kwale Campus, - Southern Roots Farm ™
Agricultural entrepreneurship in Kenya faces several challenges due to lack of skills in both business and management competencies and modern agricultural practices. As a result, no matter the financial investment in this sector, Kenya and her neighbors still lag behind in matters of food security. Despite these challenges, entrepreneurship can benefit the economy in several ways, including: Providing job opportunities, Increasing competition and boosting productivity.
CIRMI Research is focused on entrepreneurship research in agriculture which includes studies on the factors that influence agricultural entrepreneurship, the role of women in agricultural entrepreneurship, and the impact of agricultural technology innovation.

Farm Visits
In our effort to produce fruit and green vegetables locally, to supply the CrystalPerk International Business Park and the wider coast consumers, the Southern Roots facility at Shimoni in Kwale, two acres of agripreneur site and two successful hydroponics gardens.
Hydroponics is the process of growing plants in sand, gravel or liquid, with added nutrients but without soil.
The gardens are enclosed in a net to try to minimize the impact of the many insects, and caterpillars, which come to the greens in the garden “like moths to a light on a dark night”.
We regularly harvest lots of green vegetables- spinach, lettuce and kale, mangoes, chilies, basil, tomato, melons, watermelons, cucumbers, coriander, rocket and more.
We plan to expand the gardens now that we know that is works.
Our Field Tours & Research
Farm tours
CIRMI Kwale Campus links visitors with farmers, promotes an educational and cultural exchange and builds a global community conscious of ecological farming practices.
Visitors participate in the daily life of hosts while receiving CIRMI educational opportunities, meals and accommodation during their visit. They learn to grow their own food, help on the farm, and experience a new culture.
Home tours have hosts open their homes to receive visitors who want to connect with food, organic food, regenerative agriculture and give a hand in the everyday tasks.
